  • Skull | Giraffe | Giraffa camelopardalis

The giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world, with even new-born babies being taller than most humans.

Characterised by its long legs, long neck, and distinctive spotted pattern, many people first believed the giraffe was a cross between a leopard and a camel, which is reflected in its scientific name, Giraffa camelopardalis.

Even the giraffe's tongue is long! Their 50+ centimetre long tongue helps them pluck tasty morsels from branches. Giraffes eat most of the time and, like cows, regurgitate food and chew it as cud.

This skull is CITES approved to ensure that there has been no illegal culling or poaching of these animals. It has been obtained with all the legal permits.

We work with guys that are registered with government conservation authorities in the to culling industry that are called to keep population numbers to a certain size within game reserves. In South Africa you have to be given authority to do any culling on a farm and obtain permits and permission before any culling can be done. This is done so that our conservation guys can keep an eye on population numbers within South Africa and no reckless killing of all animals will happen.

Culling is necessary  as game reserves can only keep so many of a certain type of animal on a farm which depends on the size of the farm. To many one one type of animal can cause destructions to an ecosystem and then cause the whole are to be effected and then cause more harm to other animals due to lack of space and food.

When culling there is a system in place where they first start off with the older animals that are past breeding age and have lived longer. Then the will cull an animal that may be problematic. Generally younger and breeding animals are left on the farm.  The whole animal is harvested when culling also so nothing goes to waste. The meat may go to the community or hunter. Skin, skull horns etc.. are then all used and sold so the entire animal is not just killed but actually contributes to either food or finances or that far to keep up the breeding and maintenance of the farm.
You will notice a small bullet hole in the head of the Giraffe where it was professionally culled.
